HANDBUILDING FROM HOME with Jon: BUILDING ON THE BASICS: 4 classes. Monday nights, July 20-Aug 10
Handbuilding from Home with Jon: BUILDING ON THE BASICS! Monday from 6 to 8 pm. Max: 12 students. July 20, 27, Aug 3 & 10.
This class is an intermediate level class that will build on basic handbuilding skills learned in previous classes.
Class projects will be more ambitious but will also include some new simple ones as well. Projects include multi part constructions such as small pitchers, new methods for making cool handles and new surface decoration techniques such as scraffito, slip trailing and more.
You should have taken a basic online handbuilding class already OR have basic handbuilding experience.
How it works:
You pick up clay from District Clay, sign into ZOOM and Jon Kerr will show you how to steadily advance your handbuilding skills over four sessions with fun projects. Jon demos while you create from home. Greenware can be dropped off at outside of District Clay for bisque firing on weekends. Glaze appointments available at District Clay after bisque firing.
You supply:
Piece of canvas or old sheet, paring knife or Exacto knife, old credit card or door key card, rolling pin (you can cover with sleeve to keep it clean), small piece of sponge, newspaper, plastic trash bag, 2 yard sticks or dowels approximately 3/8ths thick. Nice to have: Swiffer wet cloths for floor duster to keep floors clean.
District Clay supplies (if you need it): 12.5 lbs of stoneware clay.
Details:
If you need clay, we will leave clay for participating students outside of District Clay in a pre-determined spot for you to pick up. Please indicate whether you need clay when you check out.
Prior to your first class, Jon will send you instructions for making simple tools and setting up your work area and how to sign into Zoom. (You will need to create a Zoom account if you do not have one.) Jon will also be available during the week through email and text.

Jon Kerr began working with clay in high school, continued in college and rounded studies out with classes at the Torpedo Factory. His focus is functional ceramics, and he enjoys pushing the material in new directions, always interested in novel forms. When seeking solace from a cubicle without windows day job, he renewed his passion for working with clay in 2007.
Since then Jon manages the clay studio at Guy Mason Recreation Center in Glover Park, teachers classes at Thomas Jefferson Community Center and Guy Mason and is a substitute ceramics teacher at the Potomac School in Washington DC. He has attended conferences and workshops ranging from NCECA in Houston to Simon Leach.
