Workshop: CARBON TRAP SHINO with JOE HICKS, Sat, Sept 18, 1-5 pm
Join us for the return of our in-depth exploration with Joe Hicks of that most exciting and dynamic of glazes, CARBON TRAP SHINO.
During this half-day workshop on Sat afternoon, Sept. 18, participants will learn the mysteries of making, mixing, applying and firing carbon trap shino glazes. You will then glaze your work choosing between four Shino glazes and then load it into District Clay's reduction kiln for special carbon trap firing on Sunday. You are invited to observe (through social media or in person) the firing on Sunday, Sept. 19th.
You will also be invited to attend a special Kiln Opening at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, Sept 21st to retrieve your pots and see and discuss the results of the firing.
This special workshop is being presented by Joe Hicks, Associate Professor of Art directing ceramics and 3D design, and is an expert on Shino glazes. Joe has been working with Shino glazes for over a decade and knows intimately the ins and outs of this most fickle and beautiful of Japanese-inspired glazes.
Workshop Basics: 4-hour Shino glaze workshop, Saturday, Sept 18, 1-5 pm. Bring 5 bisqued pots to be glazed and fired (cone 10 stoneware or porcelain, no large platters or pots over 10” in height please.) Use of four Shino glazes and special carbon trap firing included.
