CLASS : Casting and Mold Making w/Connor Czora, 8 students, WED or FRI
Casting from molds has been used for hundreds of years to create pottery, sculpture, and to replicate objects. Once a mold is made, a piece can simply be re-created many many times. Casting dramatically expands the creative possibilities for art and craft practices in the studio. Using District Clay Center’s new mold making facilities, students will learn:
- Slip-casting and press-molding
- How to make simple 1-part and more complicated multi-part molds
- A variety of applications for molds such as object replication, collage, production casting, and texture transfer
- Alternative uses of molds, including mold alterations and modular mold systems
This class is suitable for beginners, and assumes students have little to no experience making molds. Because of this, the class has specific start and stop dates. For students who have more experience, the class is structured to help you work at your own pace.
Details: Wednesday evenings, 6:30-9 pm (first class is 6-11) or Friday evenings 5:30-8pm (first class is 5:30-10:30pm)
- Fee includes pottery plaster, 1 gallon of casting slip*, glazes, underglazes, oxide washes, bisque and glaze firings.
- This is a small format class and is limited to 8 students.
*Additional casting slip may be purchased from DCC
OUR NEW TERMS
We have changed our terms to adapt to shifting COVID-19 situation.
Washington DC moved into the SUBSTANTIAL category and now all people entering District Clay will be required to wear masks.
Beginning 9/8 we require that students upload their vaccination card as part of their renewal process or during the first time enrollment process.
Free Open Studio:
Aside from working in the weekly slip-casting class, students may cast during other classes that aren’t using the slip-casting room. Mold-making with wet plaster is restricted to our in-class time and additional plaster-tech hours once a week (TBD).
